Veterans Day Activities

As General George Patton’s tanks roared through France to push back the invading German Army, hundreds of American foot soldiers followed behind to secure the towns and villages that would ultimately liberate the French people.  One of those soldiers was Washington County resident, Private Ted Spangenburg.  He was wounded by enemy gun fire but lived to help change the course of world history.

His story is not much different from many others that were recorded by the Florida Education Channel and presented to all Washington County School students on Veteran’s Day.   The program reflects the honor, duty, and valor of Americans called to duty.

The program, Memories of Veterans, was hosted by retired Army Air Corp Captain and World War II veteran, Paul Gordy.

Gordy, a WWII bomber pilot and prisoner of war, was also joined by Lt. Commander Aubrey Davis, a retired Navy seal and General Stan Wisnioski who served in the Navy and Army National Guard.

Washington County School Superintendent and Chairman of the Panhandle Area Educational Consortium, Dr. Sandra Cook, set aside class time for each student in the school system to watch the program.

While students across the county watched from the classroom, several veterans watched the broadcast from the PAEC conference room during a special Veteran’s day luncheon.

Memories of Veterans with Paul Gordy, along with interviews with local Veterans can be viewed via webstreaming online.

PAEC honored local Veterans with a luncheon and a special preview of the broadcast Memories of Veterans Hosted by Paul Gordy.

Paul Gordy has been an avid recruiter of interviewing local Veterans and sharing their stories for upcoming generations. FEC has dedicated a to the Veteran stories. The FEC produced programs Memories of Veterans Hosted by Paul Gordy and Veterans' Day: Honoring Our Heritage are also available for viewing anytime, anywhere.
